UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
MASONRY WORKSHOP ARCH 3250
For the third consecutive year, the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local Union 1 MN/ND Apprenticeship Training Program, will be conducting a half semester training program in conjunction with the University of Minnesota School of Architecture. This program is available only to Undergrad Architectural Students.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
This program has been fashion after the long running program conducted by the International Masonry Institute on an annual basis.
- Breaking down barriers between design & build
- Encouraging future Architects to design more with masonry
- Teaching the valuable lessons of build ability to the architects
- Providing the importantance of quality workmanship and using trained craftworkers for projects
- Exposing Architects to the amazing potential of designing with masonry
QUICK OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM
This program runs for 14 scheduled sessions during which the Architectural Students will learn and perform within the following required parameters:
- A familiarization with basic masonry skills such as bonding material, spreading mortar, and laying masonry untis to the line
- Receive instruction in quality control and required procedures needed to construct high integrity work.
- Take on a design build challenge which describes a public building for specific targeted usage.
- Team formation of groups with four to five members that will work in the studio and in the shop to complete their projectsp
- Complete assignment of building a detail from their collaborative plan to build out using at least three or more individula masonry materials.
- All projects will need to incorporate at least two or more masonry bonds and arch construction
- Teams will submit final version of drawings for the projects and also present their finished work to a critique panel
ASSESSMENT OF PROGRAM
One of the best methods to creat future opportunity for the masonry industry and its workforce is to link with the design communtiy to eliminate barriers and create an atmosphere common understanding. The investment that we make with the designers of today will pay off in the projects of tomorrow.
